5 Ways to Be Less Boring on Social

I hope that title made you laugh…or maybe it didn’t because you fear that YOU are the boring person I am referring to. Either way, here are some quick tips that can help.

  1. Change up the TYPE of content you are posting. If you only do text + image posts, nothing else, you need to change it up. Add blogs from YOUR website, add video, live video, IGTV, etc. “But I don’t like video. Video is intimidating. I’m worried about saying something stupid.” Listen, the only way to get better at something is to just start. I was recently talking with a client about doing a live webinar as a way to gain leads/interest because COVID makes in-person events very difficult. He was all for the in-person events, but shot down the idea of a live webinar so fast. I asked why and he said that it’s because he’s never done it before and isn’t sure how it would go, AKA fear of failure. I get it. It’s new. It’s intimidating, but even if one or zero people show up, you can record the webinar and repurpose it for other content or offer it as a pre-recorded webinar to collect email leads. You have to try it.
  2. Make yourself LOOK less boring. Yes, I’m serious. If you show up with the same hairstyle, makeup (or lack thereof), background, etc. every single day on your posts/videos/stories, people pick up on that and it makes you predictable. Look the part. I know you’ve heard, “But people want us to be REAL on social media.” That is true to a point, but would you go to a hairstylist if they had grown out highlights and messy hair? Would you hire a makeup artist who posts makeup-less stories? It might be “real” but it’s also not the image that attracts clients.
  3. Repost humor. This is pretty self-explanatory. There are plenty of funny videos and memes on the internet. Share them! They are gold for engagement and add variety to your page.
  4. Collaborate with others. Have cool friends with interesting stories? Want to cross promote your content to a new audience? Invite others to do it with you!
  5. Explain the WHY more. Here’s a great example. I see people post pictures of books they are reading all the time. Typically, they take a picture of a paragraph and circle or underline it, but in my opinion, that’s not enough to make someone care about what you are reading. Explain why you wanted to share that with your audience. What does it mean to you? Instead of posting a sweaty selfie with a short caption of “workout done!” share what the workout was, what are your goals? What progress have you seen in your fitness? Where are you working out? The “why” makes people care and allows them to get to know you better.
