As soon as the government announced its plans to ban TikTok in the US, I couldn’t understand why people were freaking out over it. With a platform as successful as TikTok, it’s obvious that a different platform would swoop in on the opportunity. According to Adweek, TikTok generated “the most downloads for any app ever in a quarter” in Q1 2020. Safe to say quarantine gave it a boost. Even though there are rumors of Microsoft potentially buying TikTok US, Instagram officially introduced Reels, a new way to record 15-second clips set to music and sounds on Instagram.
Users can record and edit 15-second video clips and share them to their stories, feed, and the new Reels tab found within the user’s profile. All of the editing can be done within the app itself, but if you have a video already created, you can share that from the camera roll.
Reels also has its own version of the TikTok For You page: the Reels Explore Feed. Right now, it takes up a large chunk of the screen, making it almost impossible to miss. Also another reason why now is the time to make videos for Reels because the exposure potential is huge.
As you’re browsing through Reels, if you find a sound or song you like, you can tap the music and select “Use Audio” for your own content.
How do I use this for business?
Instagram Reels is a great opportunity to build your community, grow your reach, and get creative with your content. Here are some ideas:
- Share educational content: How-tos, tips/tricks/hacks, recipes, etc.
- Showcase products: What is it? Why do you use it? How do you use it?
- Dance videos: Do whatever is trending and don’t take yourself too seriously. It’s okay if you’re not going to be the next mirror ball winner on Dancing with the Stars.
- Travel: Go collect old videos from past vacations and turn them into travel inspiration.
- Heartwarming: Think your pet is cute? Make them do some tricks and share the cuteness with the world.
