Twitter isn’t a platform I’m often asked about, but it is a platform some of my clients choose to utilize. With over 145 million daily active users, it’s still a popular platform but I think it only works for certain brands. If you are a public figure/celebrity/politician or a global brand, then Twitter might be worth using. Most of my customers and clients do not fall into that category so I rarely recommend it. If you’re on the fence, I would not recommend using Twitter and instead put more effort towards Instagram and Facebook (Pinterest too if you’re an overachiever).
The other big reason why I typically don’t recommend Twitter is because of the character limit. Sometimes it’s nice to have to keep things short and sweet. Facebook and Instagram posts can sometimes turn into mini-blogs that people don’t have time (or desire) to read. When you are trying to build great relationships with your prospects, 280 characters is less than ideal.
“But what if I want to use Twitter anyway?” Go for it! I’d recommend tweaking your IG & FB content to fit the Twitter character limit so you aren’t creating brand new content just for Twitter. This is an easy column to add to your content calendar. Make sure you are using trending hashtags to gain some traction. Hashtags are even more important on Twitter than on Instagram. Maybe because Twitter isn’t being used by small businesses much, you can find more success there and prove me wrong. Seriously, if you crush on Twitter, please let me know because I’m very interested to hear about it.
