How to choose the right niche

You’ve probably heard the term “niche” by now, but what does it actually mean? A niche is a specialized segment of a market, industry, category or subject. With billions of social media users, you have to stand out. Niching down is a way to do that. It allows you to become a go-to person within your industry, establish clarity, and also provide clarity both for you and your customer. The niche you have today might not be the niche you have 6 months from now. It’s okay to evolve as you learn!

What’s really cool about having a niche is that it’s not something you have to go search for. It’s something you get to choose. You’re essentially choosing who exactly you want to work with. Bet you don’t get to do that at your 9-5, huh?

Here’s how you can narrow down exactly what your niche should be. Go grab a pen and piece of paper!

  1. List your industry (broad)
  2. List your category (what exact area are you interested in?)
  3. Create a list of your interests, problems you solve, expertise, etc. (get super specific – who do you help?)

Example:

Industry – Outdoors

Category – Fishing

Interest – helping women catch more muskies (lol, this is just an example that I would personally be interested in)

Another example:

Industry – Personal Development

Category – Business Coaching

Interest – Helping women in their 40s who are burnt out in their careers find a better job

Here’s how to put this into practice.

  • Use your niche to write the “about” sections of your social media, website, and Instagram bio. I help (who) with (problem).
  • Your feed posts should be related to this niche. However, I personally don’t believe your posts should always be solving problems. If all you do is post about how other people should live their lives, I think that makes you look cocky and boring. Keep the person you help in mind as you write. Ask if they will find XYZ post interesting. Maybe it is solving a problem, fun fact, a personal story, etc. Just keep changing it up!
