Instagram Enforces Age Restrictions

Technically, people under 13-years-old are not allowed to use Instagram, but that policy was never enforced. In the past, when someone signs up for Instagram, it didn’t ask for the user’s age. Until now! In an effort to create a “better user experience” and keep children safe on social media, Instagram requires users to enter their birthdate during signup. Obviously people could lie or a child’s parent could set up the account for them, but at least it’s something, right?

In addition, there’s one other update for business/creator accounts: the ability to restrict ages in other countries. This is available in settings if your account is set to a creator or business profile only. It’s exciting because it allows businesses/influencers to further reach more of the “right” people. For example, I went in to my account and set super high age restrictions in some countries to filter out some of the spam accounts that find their way onto my page.

If you have a lot of spam or foreign followers that don’t fit your target audience, I’d recommend taking the time to set up some age restrictions as well as physically going through your followers and removing spammy accounts.
